The tool (1) has an electric motor (2) for driving a tool. The motor comprises an adjustable electric brush arrangement (3), and a mode selection switch. The mode selection switch comprises different switching positions, and an adjustment device (8) is provided for shifting the brush arrangement based on the switching position of the mode selection switch. An on-off switch (7) for the motor is connected with the adjustment device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a machine tool.
