The oxygen probe, for measurement of the level of oxygen in an atmosphere, has a hot, sensing end and a cold, supporting end. A housing at the cold end of the probe supports an elongate tube 24, which extends from the housing and is closed by a solid electrolyte sensor 30 having a first surface exposed to the atmosphere and a second surface, within the elongate tube 24, exposed to a reference gas. Electrical conductors, 26 and not shown, contact the first and second surfaces and extend to the cold end of the probe. A conducting metal sleeve 26 surrounds the elongate tube 24 and a helical heater coil surrounds the sensor 30 and part of metal sleeve 26, the heater being controlled in response to a thermocouple having its hot junction at or adjacent the hot end of the probe. Connections of the oxygen probe and thermocouple to monitoring or control means, and to a supply of reference gas are provided in the housing 11. Protector sleeve 20 and filter 56 may be provided to protect the sensor from contamination or blockage.

|
