PURPOSE:To provide high reliability EL element at low cost insulative destroying forcedly that portion between a back face electrode and a transparent electrode which has locally low interlayer insulation withstand voltage, and stacking insulative protection films on the back face electrode. CONSTITUTION:In an EL element consisting of a transparent electrode 2, lower insulation layer 3, light emitting layer 4, upper insulation film 5, and back face electrode 6, which are piled on a base 1, a specified voltage is impressed between the electrodes 2, 6 to insulative destroy forcedly that portion between the electrodes 2, 6 which locally lower interlayer insulation withstand voltage than the impressed voltage, and an insulation protection film 7 is placed on the back face electrode 6. Thereby impression of drive voltage does not cause insulative destruction, and the process for prevention of water intrusion to a break point 8 will be eliminated to lead to suppression of the manufacturing cost for the thin film EL elements.
