PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting the direction of the sun for a sun following type power generation system that can detect the direction of the sun to maximize power generation efficiency in spite of being a low cost. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a power generation unit 13 equipped with solar cells more than one or two, actuators 17 and 19 for moving a power generation unit in the direction of azimuth angle and elevation angle, power detecting means 30 and 31 for detecting power outputted from the power generation unit, retrieving means 16 for retrieving the optimum azimuth angle and optimum elevation angle to maximize the power detected by the power detecting means while changing the elevation angle and azimuth angle of the power generation unit by driving the actuators, and control means 16 for simulating the direction determined by the optimum azimuth angle and optimum elevation angle retrieved by the retrieving means as the direction of the sun.
