The gripper mechanism for a postal mail handling appts., and the like, has a manual plastics operating unit (18) inserted between a swing operating lever (10) at the gripper arm and a coupling rod (7) linked to the gripper claws (6), in the gripper claw operating drive. It swings round the operating shaft (13) of the gripper claw operating drive, so that the claw can be opened while the machine is at rest easily, and without risk of injury. The manual operating unit (18) is of a firm and tough plastics, as an injection molded component.
