PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for automatically deciding a resolution of a charge coupled device camera is provided to decide new resolution automatically by using a resolution deciding pattern plate having a specific pattern and inputting the pattern to a linear CCD camera and comparing the pattern with the pre-calculated value and feeding back to a lens unit having an electric motor. CONSTITUTION: A resolution deciding pattern unit has a resolution deciding pattern plate which is etched by a laser on a coated glass plate. A linear camera photographs patterns of the resolution deciding pattern unit and obtains an image. A camera driving unit adjusts a resolution position of the linear camera. A lens driving unit adjusts a focus by moving the linear camera. A computer compares the image obtained from the linear camera with the pre-fixed image data being set for deciding a resolution, and obtains an image again and decides wanted resolution by driving the camera driving unit and the lens driving unit in accordance with the result.
