Arrangement of permanent magnets close to a water pipe prevents the build-up of limestone scale in the pipe. The permanent magnets have one pole radial to the pipe axis, and alternating polarity adjacent to each other outside the pipe, forming an alternating magnetic field within the pipe in the direction of water flow. Two or more of the adjacent permanent magnets (1) have a magnetic return connection outside the pipe (2) made of magnetically-conducting elements (3, 4). The magnetic return elements are permanent magnets (3) arranged between the permanent magnets (1) which create the magnetic field (11) within the pipe (2).
