摘要 The control unit (10) generally maintains a lean burn. Before the emission control catalyst reaches its operational or active temperature, during inlet valve opening, fuel quantity injected is increased. PREFERRED FEATURES:- The fuel injected during inlet valve opening before activation, exceeds that injected, once the catalyst has activated. Control may be achieved by protracting injection, before catalyst activation. Later, protraction diminishes as the catalyst activates. The control infers catalyst activity from a temperature sensor (16), enriching the mixture e.g. by injection protraction, when the catalyst is cold. The catalyst (12) is a three-way type reducing exhaust HC-, CO- and NOx components. A variant based on similar principles, employs an oxygen sensor.
