Announcement system and method for driving it

The method involves using a call answering system (10) which has an answering device (12) in which a spoken response is provided in the form of a digital answering signal. There is detection of an overlap between the speech input and the response, for providing a compensation signal (y) controlling an adaptive digital filter for echo suppression. The difference signal (d) of the speech input signal and the compensation signal is fed to a speech recognition device (14). The adaption of the filter components of the digital filter is effected when the spoken response only is provided, with termination of the adaption when an overlap between the response and the speech input is detected.
