Compositions intended for the treatment of paper and cardboard surfaces characterized in that they have a pH of less than 6 and contain between 30 and 50% by weight of a mixture constituted by glyoxal (G), urea (U), an alkali metal salt of an oxygenated boron acid (A) and calcium hydroxide (D) in the following molar ratios <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> coating baths containing this composition and treated papers.
