摘要 Integral diagnosis and/or therapy or tumours in hollow organs comprises topical admin. of gamma-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Detection is effected by irradiation with light of wavelength 390-430 nm, pref. 410 nm, which causes tumours to fluoresce. A krypton ion laser is pref. used for this purpose. Therapy is by irradiation with light of wavelength 600-650 nm, pref. 630 nm, esp. using a neodymium-yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:Yag) laser. Admin. is e.g. by inhalation into the bronchial system, topically to the cervix, instillation into the peritoneal cavity and topically or by instillation in the case of the bladder. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used esp. to detect and treat tumours (including cancerous and precancerous lesions) of the respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity, gastrointestinal tract, female genital tract and partic. urinary tract. The method enables the detection of early cancerous conditions which cannot be detected by endoscopy, thus reducing relapse and progression rates. Further, the method is more effective than procedures involving the i.v. admin. of porphyrin photosensitisers. In partic., because ALA has higher tumour selectivity (tumour to healthy tissue uptake = 20:1 compared with 2-5:1 for porphyrins), results can be evaluated visually rather than by computer-generated imaging and phototoxic side effects do not occur.
