The oxidation inhibitor is composed of, in weight percent, 48 to 65% silicon carbide, 5 to 20% aluminum, 3 to 12% ferro-silicon, 6 to 14% carbonate of magnesia, 8 to 12% clay, to 6% non-baked bentonite, about 1 to 3% interfacial activator, in particular clay/bentonite weight ratio of 2/1. It prevents oxidation on the surface of high silicon carbon steel slab containing silicon of over 3 weight percent. It also reduces iron loss and working beam in a heating furnace by coating inhibitor uniformly on the surface of steel.
