<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill discriminating device 1, capable of detecting a carrying direction with an accuracy finer than the period of carrying pulse even if the inclination of a bill 6 to the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction is close to 0 without increase in cost of the whole bill discriminating device 1. <P>SOLUTION: The bill discriminating device 1 comprises a carrying passage 3 for carrying the bill 6, an optical line sensor 24 having a plurality of light receiving arrays aligned linearly in the carrying width direction on the carrying passage 3, and an identification processing part 35 identifying the bill 6 based on a binary image B read by the optical line sensor 23.
