Hardened stainless steel strip production

Production of a hardened stainless steel strip involves hot rolling and immediate quenching of a steel of composition 10-20 (preferably 14-15)% Cr, up to 3 (preferably 1.4-2.0)% Ni, up to 1.5 (preferably 0.2-0.6)% Mo, up to 1 (preferably 0.02-0.04)% Mn, up to 1 (preferably 0.2-0.4)% Si, up to 0.6 (preferably 0.25-0.35)% Ti, up to 0.1 (preferably 0.04-0.06)% C, up to 0.1 (preferably 0.02-0.05)% N, balance Fe and impurities. The steel is preferably hot rolled to an excess thickness which depends on the measured carbide-former and/or free carbon content of the steel, followed by quenching to a ferritic-martensitic structure and cold rolling to final thickness.
