PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hobbing machine in which a detection structure is formed simple and the phase of a hob is accurately discriminated. SOLUTION: A dummy workpiece 26 cylindrically formed on the outer periphery is set on the axis of a workpiece. A gear generation is performed in the dummy workpiece 26 by using the end area 17a-2 of the edge 17a of the hob 17 not used for finishing. Therefore, a fine slit part 26a is formed in the dummy workpiece 26. Then, the position of the fine slit part 26a is detected by a sensor, and based on the detected results, the phase of the fine slit part 26a is discriminated.
