A water-based ballpoint ink composition which comprises an alkali-swellable and associable thickener comprising a polymer having carboxyl and hydrophobic groups, a pigment, a polar solvent comprising water, a pH regulator, and other additive. It suffers no pigment sedimentation and has long-term stability. It can be used in the reservoir of a ballpoint having a simple, direct ink-supply structure comparable to that of an oil-based ballpoint.
