DEVICE FOR DETECTING AN EXPLOSIVE IN OBJECTS UNDER INVESTIGATION

The invention relates to the domain of neutron-radiation analysis of materials to detect nitrogen-containing explosives in sealed objects . The device contains an X-ray unit and a unit for neutron-radiation analyses including a housing (15) with a radiation protection means (16) ; a horizontal shaft (10) with one inlet (9) made in the housing and radiation protection means and with a chamber formed by neutron reflectors in the form of plates mounted in the horizontal shaft. The device also contains a means for moving the object in a rectangular frame (11) placed in the horizontal shaft and adjoining the upper surface with the possibility to move along it and equipped with, at least, one neutron reflector mounted in the plane perpendicular to the horizontal shaft's longitudinal axis,- and a former of the flux of thermal neutrons with, at least, two sources of thermal neutrons. The upper and lower neutron reflectors being made from two fixed elements and one movable element placed between them and equipped with a drive so that the movable element can move relative to the fixed elements in horizontal direction perpendicular the horizontal shaft's longitudinal axis. In addition, the device contains a gamma-radiation detection unit, placed in a cavity behind neutron deflectors, consisting of, at least, two gamma radiation detectors fitted with collimators and mounted on the movable elements of the upper and lower neutron reflectors, and a computer interface with detectors connected to the output of the gamma- radiation detection unit and to the input of the drive of the movable elements. The invention helps reduce probabilities of a false alarm, lowers the value of minimal mass of an explosive detectable , and decreases its sizes and mass .
