An electrochemical cell including: an anode assembly having opposite surfaces; and a cathode having at least one folded portion and having ionic continuity with the opposite surfaces of the anode assembly, wherein the anode assembly includes an anode, and an active metal ion conducting membrane that is disposed between the anode and the cathode, wherein the active metal ion conducting membrane has at least one folded portion.
