<p>The invention relates to the process of preparation of Risedronic acid and Risedronate sodium hemipentahydrate in the absence of organic solvents. The process comprises, reacting 3-pyridyl acetic acid with phosphorous acid and phosphorus trichloride to give Risedronic acid which is further reacted with sodium hydroxide in water medium to give Risedronate sodium hemipentahydrate.</p>
