PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control unit of an internal combustion engine capable of improving controllability of a switching valve for controlling supply of exhaust gas to an HC adsorption section by performing learning in consideration of characteristics of a driver and a type of vehicle. SOLUTION: The control unit of the internal combustion engine controls the internal combustion engine having the switching valve for selectively switching a passage in which exhaust gas flows to either a first passage provided with the HC adsorption section or a second passage bypassing the HC adsorption section. A switching valve control means performs control of forcibly opening the switching valve according to an operation state. A learning means sets through learning a valve closing prohibition time in which the switching valve is kept open and is prohibited from closing after the switching valve is opened by the switching valve control means. The optimum valve closing prohibition time according to the characteristics of a driver and a type of vehicle can be thus set and the controllability of the switching valve or the like can be improved.
