An apparatus and method for providing a security mechanism on a mobile device are described. The method (700) includes determining (730) a distance from an initial location for a device, the distance from the initial location determined using a sensor included in the device, determining (740) if the distance from the initial location for the device exceeds a first threshold value for the distance, and initiating (750) a first alternate operating condition for the device if the distance has been exceeded. The apparatus (200) includes a sensor (280) that determines a distance from an initial location and a controller (210) that receives the distance from the sensor and determines if the distance exceeds a first threshold value for the distance, the controller (210) further initiating a first alternate operating condition if the first threshold value for the distance has been exceeded. The first alternate operating condition includes at least one security measure used to prevent unauthorized use of the apparatus. |
