PURPOSE:To elevate a resolving power with eliminating directional errors, repeat errors, etc. by generating the standard position signal to reset a counter according to the rising or falling of a specific count pulse during the generation of standard position detecting pulse. CONSTITUTION:Count pulses 106, 107 and standard position detecting pulse 103 are respectively outputted from pulsized circuits 113, 114, 115 connected to photodetecting elements 110, 111, 112 and the pulses 106, 107 are outputted to a direction discriminator 116. The pulse 107 or a reverse pulse is also inputted into an analog switch 117 according to the output of the discriminator 116 corresponding to the moving direction of an index scale against the main scale. The discriminator 116 and switch 117 are connected to a counter 118 and the switch 117 and pulse 103 are inputted to a pulse generator 119 and only when the pulse 103 is generated a standard position signal 108 is outputted to a counter 118 by the rising of the pulse 107.
