In an apparatus indicating the angular position of a rotary member, an impelling coil (51) is provided, which axis is in a corresponding relationship with the rotation axis of the rotary member. A coil (65) is wound about the rotary member, and a capacitor (66) is provided in the coil (65) to form a resonant circuit LC. The coil (65) in the rotary member is wound about so that the application of an alternating magnetic field to the impelling coil (51) induces a resonance in the circuit LC, which is constant for each of the angular positions of the rotary member. Pickup coils (53, 55) are provided in such a way so that the planes of both the coil and impelling coil (51) are orthogonal. The circuit LC resonance produces signals in outlet coils (53, 55) which are dependent on the angular position of the rotary member. Said signals can be processed to determine the angular position, the process being simplified by the arrangement of said outlet coils because the signals which are produced therein are quadrature signals.
