A nitriding process wherein a plasma is generated in a furnace comprising the parts to be treated on a support at a pressure inferior to about 20 mbar whereby the temperature is maintained below 560.degree.C and 3 to 15% of cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon gases are added to the nitriding gases.
