Disclosed is a process for preparing (±)-trans-4-p-fluorophenyl-3-hydroxymethyl-1-methylpiperidine of formula I; which process comprises the reduction of a compound of the general formula IX or IX' or a mixture thereof, wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is the compound of formula VI and its addition salts.
