Title cpds. of formula (I) are new (XCH2)3.C.CH2.O.(CHR.CHR1O)nH (R and R1 = H or one may also be CH3 or CH2X'; X and X' = Br or Cl; n = 1-10) and are prepd. by reacting halo-substd. neopentyl alcohol with one or more epoxides in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. (I) are fire-retardant plasticisers without the tendency of similar known cpds. to release HX when heated; also inters. fire-retardants hydraulic fluids, nonionic surfactants and emulsifiers. Phosphates from (I, X = Br) are also claimed. |
