The display device comprises first sensors (10) which generate a first group of signals which are intended for display and are characteristic of operating and maintenance conditions of the motor vehicle, and second sensor means (20) for generating a second group of signals which characterise the operating conditions of the vehicle and are not intended for display, selector devices (50) for generating signals which are characteristic of instructions issued by the vehicle driver, a processor circuit (30) for processing the signals generated by the first (10) and second (20) sensor means and the selector devices (50), and a display unit (40) controlled by the processor circuit. During the use of the motor vehicle, the processor circuit (30) continuously identifies predetermined operating states of the vehicle from the signals of the second sensor means (20) and of the selector devices (50), selects from the signals generated by the first sensor means (10) those signals which are characteristic of the predetermined operating state and brings about the display of these selected signals exclusively as long as the vehicle remains in this operating state. Accessories (60, 61) assigned to the display device are provided with contact sensors which, when the respective accessory (60, 61) is touched by the driver, cause signals to be output which are characteristic of the operating state of said accessory and cause these signals to be reproduced on the display unit (40) controlled by the processor circuit (30). <IMAGE>
