In a filling of a vessel with a liquid the vessel is placed onto a lifting plate and guided to a filler spout up to a predetermined distance measured from its base, the vessel opening being lifted into a sealed filling position below the filler spout. The vessel is filled up to a predetermined filling level by opening a valve associated to the filler spout, whereupon the supply of liquid is terminated, and a volume of liquid still present between the valve and the filling level flows into the vessel. In order to achieve in a simple and cost-efficient fashion slight deviations from the nominal value of the filled volume of liquid so that a compensation of vessel height variations is effected in the case of similar vessels, the afterflowing liquid volume is controlled as a function of the vessel height in such fashion that in the case of a vessel height being smaller as compared with a mean vessel height there is an afterflow of a larger volume of liquid and in the case of a greater vessel height there is an afterflow of a smaller volume of liquid.
