It is the object of the invention to reduce the subjective influences in the generation of colour limit patterns, the generation of the colour limit patterns being intended to be possible using multicolour printing with scale colours. According to the invention, the object is achieved with a process in which the manipulated variables of all the actuators involved in the inking of a printing machine to achieve a required OK state of the printed product are stored, in which, furthermore, the required deviations of the manipulated variables from the OK state to achieve the permissible limit values of the inking are stored, and in which, with the aid of an open-loop and closed-loop control device, colour limit patterns are printed automatically, using the stored values. The printing machine according to the invention contains, for this purpose, apart from an open-loop and closed-loop control device, an input device for the manipulated variable deviations, a store for the desired values representing the OK state and for the manipulated variable deviations, and a programming system for the automatic open-loop or closed-loop control of the operating processes necessary for printing colour limit patterns.
