The suspension includes a variable damping element through which the reaction of the suspension can be adjusted to suit the dynamics. The control system monitors the upward and downward movements of the vehicle and generates control signals to vary the damping characteristics of the suspension element. The control system also calculates the contour of the road surface to enable the suspension control to be adjusted accordingly. The control system incorporates time delay controls to eliminate transients. The variable suspension element is fitted between the sprung- and unsprung masses of the vehicle. The movement signals derived by the monitoring circuits are processed by set amplification factors, with the amplitude set to operate under different road- and dynamic conditions.
