PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water absorbing material capable of effectively absorbing water, retaining the freshness of a food, etc., keeping the quality of the food such as a taste at a prescribed level and improving the merchandise value by covering a specific water absorbing film with layers containing an additive. SOLUTION: This water absorbing material is obtained by covering a water absorbing film consisting essentially of a polyethylene oxide-based polymer with layers containing an additive such as a taste substance, e.g. sodium glutamate or a nutrient supplementing substance, etc., e.g. vitamin C.
