PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a band brake in which speed changing is made by fixing a rotary drum to be replaceable to a multiple disc brake while suppressing increase of the dimensions in the diameter direction and in the axial direction of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: A diameter of a piston 24 of a clutch 3,5,R/C for a third speed, a fifth speed, and rearward movement is reduced by bringing the piston into contact with an innermost peripheral position of a clutch pack 22. By this, the diameter of an outer peripheral edge of the rotary drum 12 close to an opening edge relating to a front end of an opening of a transmission case 6 is reduced. An annular space 25 is set between the opening edge of the transmission case 6 and the outer peripheral edge of the rotary drum. A brake pack 28 of a second speed and sixth speed brake 2,6/B is constituted of alternating positions of a non-rotation plate 26 provided by being spline-fitted so as to rotationally engage with the front end of the opening of the transmission case 6, and a rotation plate 27 provided by being spline-fitted so as to rotationally engage with the outer peripheral edge of the rotary drum 12 in the annular space 25.
