Process for the continuous thermal treatment of small-particulate solid material in rotary kilns, and rotary kiln for carrying out this process

Fine particulate solid material is subjected to a continuous thermal treatment in a rotary kiln, carrier gas being introduced in part streams both cocurrent with and countercurrent to the solid material, and being discharged, together with the reaction gas, through a gas outlet projecting into the reaction chamber. The conversion takes place in a rotary kiln having appropriate inlets for the carrier gas and a gas outlet for joint discharge of carrier gas and reaction gas, the gas outlet extending, in the upper part of the reaction chamber, from a lengthwise end thereof into the former.
