The invention relates to a core comprising parallel tensile-resistant, filamentary reinforcing elements separated from one another by a rubber layer. To be able to build a core which, with comparatively few, but high-strength, reinforcing elements, has a large volume and in addition is designed so as to be compression resistant in the longitudinal direction, according to the invention the mutual spacing of the reinforcing elements in the centre of the core is larger than in a lateral region. The mutual spacing of the reinforcing elements expediently increases gradually.
