The tensioner has a fixed axle (1) and a rotary element (2a) set on the outer circumferential face of same to rotate about this axle. A tension roller (5) is held on the bearing (6) set on the outer circumference (25) of the secondary element (20) which makes up part of the rotary element. The main element (19) of the rotary element comprises an inner and outer circumferential face (21, 22) which are axially symmetrical relative to the first centre line (a) of the axle. The secondary element (20) has an inner circumferential face whose centre line (c) agrees with the first centre line and an outer circumferential face with a centre line agreeing with the second centre line (b) of the bearing running parallel to the first centre line.
