PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for user authentication, which enable user authentication without sending and receiving a password itself and a recording medium where a user authenticating program is recorded. SOLUTION: This system has a 1st ciphering means 122 which reads the password of a user who is requesting a connection with a network out of a user management table 20 and ciphers an arbitrary code sequence on a service provider side by using the password as a key, a 2nd ciphering means 120 which deciphers the arbitrary code sequence supplied from the service provider side to the user side by using a password inputted by the user as a key, and a matching means which judges whether or not the user has right by matching the ciphered code sequence ciphered by the 1st ciphering means 122 against the ciphered code sequence ciphered by the 2nd ciphering means 120 after the ciphered code sequence ciphered by the 2nd ciphering means 120 is sent to the service provider side.
