PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external skin preparation with no greasiness when applying on the skin, and with sufficient moisture and excellent powder fixation while imparting dry feeling, and to provide a moisturizer, a viscosity-imparting agent, a fixer for a coloring agent or an agent for hair shape retention to be compounded in the external skin preparation. SOLUTION: The external skin preparation comprises a high molecular weight sericin having an average molecular weight of 70,000 to 300,000 and thixotropic index of 2 to 20 expressed by the formula (1): thixotropic index (TI value)=(M<1> -M<2> )/(M<2> -M<3> ) wherein M<1> : a viscosity at a revolution of 0.6 rpm, M<2> : a viscosity at a revolution of 6 rpm, and M<3> : a viscosity at a revolution of 60 rpm, which are measured for 1 wt.% sericin aqueous solution at the liquid temperature of 25 deg.C using a roter No.2 on B8L viscometer.
