Appts. for determining the level of finish on a running yern(20) has two conductive elements contacting the yarn at spaced points and connected in a closed circuit with a power source and a meter (34) responsive to current flow along the yarn between the elements. One element(24) is connected to a point of fixed potential and a third element(28) contacts the yarn downstream of the second(26) and is also connected to the point of fixed potential. The point is pref. at ground potential and the elements are pins, the grounding preventing stray static charge accumulation from interfacing with the measurements. The meter is e.g. connected to an analogue-to-digital converter(36) with an output to a computer(38).
