The protective film includes at least Si, Cr and N. Also disclosed is a method for making an optical recording medium having a recording layer and a protective film on the substrate comprising the steps of preparing a cathode comprising of an alloy target of Si and at least an element selected from the group of metal element, semimetal element and semiconductive element having less specific electric-resistance than Si, and performing a DC magnetron-sputtering in an atmosphere including at least an inert gas and N2, gas to form a deposition of the protective film.
