The sorting apparatus comprises at least one sorting wheel (Sr10), provided with a rotary drive (D), for the selective distribution of conveying-material carriers arriving on at least one feeding conveyor device (Fz11 to Fz14) to at least two conveyor devices (Fw11 to Fw15) leading away, the transfer of the conveying-material carriers (FT) received by the sorting wheel (Sr10) onto a conveyor device (Fw11 to Fw15) leading away, selected by activation via the rotary drive (D), being carried out as a result of the actuation of a relay device. The sorting apparatus according to the invention is particularly suitable for the sorting of mail. <IMAGE>
