PURPOSE: A cathode structure for a cathode ray tube is provided to obtain a high emission current density by adding a reduction metal compound to an electronic radiation material layer. CONSTITUTION: A cathode heater(4) is inserted and fixed into a cylindrical sleeve(2). A gas metal(1) is formed at an upper end of the cylindrical sleeve(2). A main component of the gas metal(1) is a nickel. The gas metal(1) includes a minute quantity of an activated metal. An electronic radiation material layer(30) is formed at an upper surface of the gas metal(1). The electronic radiation material layer(30) includes an alkali earth metallic oxide having a barium oxide(BaO) and a reduction metal compound. The reduction metal compound includes a reduction metal having at least one of Ni,Si,Mg,Fe,Ti,Hf,V,Nb,Ta,Al,Cu,Zn,Cr,Mo,W,Zr,Co,Mn,Re,Os,Ru, and Ir and at least one of a nitrogen(N), an oxygen(O), a hydrogen(H), and a carbon(C).
