A method is disclosed for synthesizing a frequency which has a rational relation with respect to a reference or clock frequency, the method comprising: providing a plurality of periodic pattern signals (g0-gN), feeding said plurality of periodic pattern signals to a N-way commutator (20); clocking the periodic pattern generator at a frequency f1; and rotating the commutator (20) at a frequency f2 thereby obtaining an output frequency of f1+f2 or f1-f2.
