High Si-Ni-Cr steel resistant to concentrated nitric acid with good workability and good weldability consists of 0-0.02 % C, 5-7 % Si, 0-10 % Mn, 8.0-14.5 % Cr, and 16-18 % Ni. Pref. at least one additional element selected from Ti, Ta, Zr and Nb is also present in an amount of from not less than 4 times the amount of C to not more than 2% Zr and Ti are esp. included. The steel is used for appliances that produce, treat and use nitric acid of a high concentration and temperature.
