The melt spinning process and apparatus comprises aspiration means including an exhaust port located proximate the axis and the upper end of the spinning chamber which serves to draw a controlled minor portion of quench gas from a radial quench zone through the filaments to the exhaust port and to continuously remove volatilized monomer from the region neighboring the spinneret.
