The 4-16 gray leveled image is recorded with the same speed as the binary coded image recording speed using a standard type recording device and the gray level recording controller. The controller includes a record signal level converting circuit (10) for converting 4 bit or analog image data into 16 gray leveled image data, shift registers (20) for outputting serial 1728 bit image data in parallel, latch unit (30) for holding parallel image data transmitted from the shift registers for a fixed time, an address decoder (40) for outputting image data held by the latch unit selectively, a writing timing control circuit (70) for controlling the address decoder, a block strobe gate (50) for dividing image data by 8 blocks and outputting block image data selectively and a resister array (60) for recording block.
