The prosthesis consists of a socket (1) to receive the femoral head (2), both of which are made from a hard material - a metal or ceramic - and their shape and dimensions are such that a gap (9) is created between them. The gap allows the formation of a laminar film of synovial liquid resulting from the combination of suction and pressure phases in the acetabulum and acting as a lubricant between the socket and head. The gap between the head and socket is between about 0.005 and 0.05mm, and the polar zone of the socket has a circular recess (1a) which acts as a reservoir for the liquid.
