PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent energy absorption characteristic from varying depending on the direction of impact load or a portion to which the impact load is applied. SOLUTION: The invention is related to a structure for absorbing impact energy on top of the body an automobile, including a panel 22 of a longitudinally extending structural member, interior trim 26 spaced from the panel in the direction of the interior of the automobile, and an energy absorber 28 made from a plastically deformable metal and arranged within the space between the interior trim 26 and the panel. On an imaginary plane that crosses the longitudinal direction of the energy absorber 28, the energy absorber 28 includes an exterior wall part 36 extending along the panel, an interior wall part 37 extending along the interior trim, and a connecting wall part 38 extending substantially in a straight line and interconnecting the exterior wall part and the interior wall part. The connecting wall part 38 is disposed at an inclination to the direction of load F on the imaginary plane which is applied to the energy absorber.
