PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing niobium and/or tantalum powder having large specific surface area suitable for fabricating capacitors as well as excellent ease of handling. SOLUTION: The niobium and/or tantalum powder can be obtained by heating fine powders of niobium and/or tantalum to 900-1,300 deg.C in the presence of alkaline-earth metal and/or rare-earth metal oxides in vacuum or in inert atmosphere to sinter fine powders of niobium and/or tantalum and subjecting the resultant sintered compact to acid treatment and regulating the amount of the oxides based on the metal powder to 10-600% by volume fraction; or the niobium and/or tantalum powder can be obtained by mixing the oxides of niobium and/or tantalum with alkaline-earth metal and/or rare-earth metal, applying heating and reduction to form fine powders of niobium and/or tantalum, regulating, without separating them, the amount of alkaline-earth metal and/or rare- earth metal oxides, if necessary, and then carrying out treatments similar to those in the above.
