A push-scooter 100 has a treadle drive mechanism with a treadle axle 9, a drive lever 2, a tether linkage 22 and a drive coupling 5. The drive lever can be pivotally actuated from a rest position to cause the tether linkage to unwind from a tether spool 3 to effect rotation of the tether spool. Rotation of the tether spool effects rotation of a drive spool 4 which takes up a drive coupling such as a chain which in turn engages a freewheel device 12 linked to one wheel and thereby drives the push-scooter forward. The lever is biased to return to its rest position in the absence of an actuating force. The drive coupling may be resiliently attached to the scooter body by a helical spring 24; this spring can be the biasing force that returns the lever to its rest position. A reversing mechanism may be included that disengages the drive coupling from the freewheel device, this mechanism may be a leaf spring 11 that lifts the drive coupling from engagement with the freewheel device. |
