430,844. Golf - practising appliances. BERRY, A., 7, Portsmouth Road, Kingston, Surrey. March 19, 1934, No. 8564. [Class 132 (ii)] A device for indicating movements of a player's head in practising a golf swing comprises a number of optically aligned and spaced aperture sights situated adjacent the normal position the ball would occupy relatively to the player and which afford a visual indication of the direction and extent of movement of the head by the asymmetry produced by such movement. As shown in Fig. 3, the device comprises a casing 1 having a square aperture 4 closed by a ground glass screen 5. Light entering through the screen is reflected by a mirror 3 and viewed by the player through a lens 8 mounted in a circular aperture 7 in the casing. A hood 10 casts a shadow over the lens. In order that the observed movement of the aperture 4 should be in the same direction as the movement of the head, the aperture is arranged within the focus of the lens. Cross wires 11, 12 are arranged between the aperture sights, the horizontal wire 11 being disposed further from the lens than the other to render the observed vertical head movements proportional to the horizontal movements. Alternatively, the wires may be equidistant from the lens and the latter be combined with a cylindrical lens having a horizontal axis. The casing is mounted on three legs, of which one is adjustable. In a modification, Fig. 6, the casing 16 is cylindrical and hinged to a base plate 2 carrying a mirror 3. Light reflected from the mirror passes through a circular lens 21 and is observed through a square aperture closed by a ground glass screen 19. In further modifications, the wires are replaced by photographic representations of pointers, or the device may include optically aligned lantern slides marked with rings, dots or other symbols. |
